"The Chrysanthemums" by John Steinbeck. It's a part of his collection: The Long Valley. It shouldn't be to hard to find, he read it in a 'modern short story collection'.
Yeah, that's totes it Loretta. But it looks so soulless on screen that I demand, as selector, that everyone find a hard copy to read. Preferably in a thrift store paperback version, I think Steinbeck would like that, don't you? Anyway, the main reason I picked this story is I desperately want someone to explain it to me! I think it's absolutely beautiful but (spoiler alert) why does she cry? -Seth
that is barely even a spoiler at all. I knew this story was going to end in tears the minute she started talking excitedly about how much she knew about chrysanthemums. INEVITABLE.
