Next Selection: Gerard..and it's an essay!

I'm slowing getting back in the swing of things here, thanks for bearing with me! Gerard has sent me his selection for the next reading, it's an essay "Host" by David Foster Wallace. He's sent me (and I've shared it here below) the link to it, but wants you all to know that the longer version is well worth reading if you can dig up the collection "Consider the Lobster" by David Foster Wallace.

I hope you all enjoy it! And Gerard, want to share some reflections to get us going sometime this week?

Thoughts on Cat in the Rain

I like this story. A lot.

The American girl wants the cat. She sees, I think, a bit of herself in the poor thing out about in the world and unloved. I think the cat is sort of a part of the home she'd love to have with long hair and pretty things, and domesticity..I read recently that the girl's words about wanting a cat were Hadley's (his first wife) when they were newlyweds and she wanted a baby and a pretty home life..

So, thoughts?? I'd love to see them..on the whole story, the girl, the cat, the innkeeper..  :)

Reviving...

We seem to have fallen apart a bit at the holidays. I'd like to start up again, if possible! So, what does everyone think about just jumping back in with Ernest Hemingway's 'Cat in the Rain'? It's short and easily found, and interesting (I think!)

Do let me know if you're back in!! And, Happy Lent!

Does anyone else feel a little sorry for Watho? Are we supposed to?  What do you all think about the tale?

Next Week and Beyond..

Thanks, Charles for being so patient with the holiday slump! We have a few weeks before Christmas, and I was hoping Jenna would pick for the next discussion.

After that, so close to Christmas, we'll all probably be pretty busy, but I want to try to keep some sort of conversation alive..so I thought we could pick a movie and slowly discuss that for a few weeks..something with meat to it, but not terribly distracting, any suggestions?
